Crochet Christmas Pickle Ornament

Crochet Christmas Pickle Ornament

The holidays are fast approaching so I wanted to share my Christmas Pickle Ornament Pattern!

What is the Christmas Pickle Tradition?

I was first introduced to this tradition when I was prepping for Pickle Fest. Essentially, the Christmas Pickle is hidden in the tree and, on Christmas morning, the first person to find the pickle is said to have good luck!

From what I can tell from the inter-webs, the origin of this tradition varies. Some say it originated from Germany, where it’s supposedly called Weihnachtsgurke (“Christmas cucumber”). While others believe the tradition is almost certainly an American marketing scheme.

No matter where the Christmas pickle really came from, one thing’s for sure; it’s a whole lot of fun. Adding a new tradition to share with family always brings extra holiday cheer. And honestly, who could resist a happy little pickle hanging on the tree?

Let's get into the pattern

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn (green, red, and white).
  • 2.75mm or 3.00mm crochet hook
  • One pair of safety eyes
  • Poly-fil
  • Ribbon (sparkly)
  • Embroidery thread in black
  • Embroidery needle
  • Pre-made pom-poms or make white yarn to make your own
  • Hot glue gun/glue sticks OR needle/thread

Notes

  • The number before the abbreviation tells you how many stitches of that type to make.
    • Example: 2 DC means 1 double crochet in one stitch and 1 double crochet in the next stitch
  • (...)x # Indicates a repeat
    • Example: (Dc inc, DC)x 4 means 2 double crochet in one stitch and 1 double crochet in the next stitch. This will be repeated 4 times.
  • (#) Indicates the number of stitches you should have at the end of the round
    • Example: (12) means there should be a total of 12 stitches in the round
